Sally Swatland Added: 2010-01-16 Category: Painting (b. 1946)
Images of the sea have long captivated our imagination and have been a popular source of inspiration for artists who have found a sympathetic audience with their work. Contemporarily, Sally Swatland’s images of young children playing on the beaches are tinged with a sense of nostalgia that reminds us of a bygone time, when a day at the beach offered respite from the busyness of daily life. Her sensitive images evoke the reminiscences of a period when life was uncomplicated and happiness was found in the simplest of activities. This is just one of the aspects of Sally’s work that audiences are drawn to - the sense that through her pictures one can retreat into the past.
Tony Sheath Added: 2010-01-16 Category: Painting Tony was born in London in 1946 and there he developed his interest in painting. The quality of his landscapes and figurative work has always shown incredible attention to detail, and the subject is inevitably appealing and depicts tranquil rustic scenes. Many of his scenes are related to Herefordshire and Gloucestershire with one of his favourite rivers, the Wye being the basis for many canvases. A main characteristic of his river scenes are the depiction of tranquil, crystal clear water, the clarity of the river bed clearly viewable, with horses and figures often as focal points. During the 1970's and 80's he was the resident artist for Frost & Reed, a leading Bond Street Gallery, where he had considerable success. In addition he was contracted to an important publishing firm who has produced his paintings as limited edition prints, and there are several other publishers such as Parnassus and Paper House who have also reproduced his work as greeting cards, helping to further his very successful career.

Eybl Franz Added: 2010-01-16 Category: Painting (1805, Vienna - 1880, Vienna)
Franz Eybl was an Austrian painter and lithographer.
Eybl entered the Vienna Akademie at the age of ten, studying sculpture under Josef Klieber and landscape painting (1817-20) with Joseph Mössmer (1780-1845), from whom Eybl also learnt the new technique of lithography. Eybl then spent three years with Johann Baptist Lampi and Franz Caucig (1762-1828), reproducing antique statues and casts. Eybl studied history painting (1823-28), during which period he came under the influence of Johann Peter Krafft, who introduced him to the principles of realism, suggesting that he work directly from nature and reflect contemporary, everyday subject-matter in his painting. Together with Josef Danhauser and Matthias Ranftl (1805-54), Eybl was among the most significant followers of Krafft’s ideas, also becoming one of the principal Viennese painters of the Biedermeier period.
